“My interest in life comes from setting myself huge, apparently unachievable challenges and trying to rise above them” – Richard Branson
Obstacles are a necessary part of life for everyone – and particularly for leaders. In fact, the most successful people in the world have only got to where they are now because they’ve learnt to overcome countless obstacles along the way.
Here’s 3 steps to overcome an obstacle in order to achieve success.
Change your perspective
Fear can stop us from moving forward. If you see the obstacle as something that prevents you from achieving your goal, it will do just that. Rather than allow the obstacle to dictate your actions, think about the success that can be achieved if that obstacle is overcome. A road block becomes a learning experience.
Understand the obstacle
In order to overcome the obstacle, you must first have a clear understanding of how or why it exists in the first place. Ask questions. Investigate. Look at the obstacle from the bigger picture. Sometimes when we do this, we may discover that the problem isn’t actually what we first thought.
Learn from previous obstacles
Look at past obstacles you’ve overcome and how you can apply what you learnt in those situations in the existing scenario. It may not be obvious at first, but you may find similarities from past experience if you delve deeper. If it’s completely new and unfamiliar territory, identify the possible solutions and keep trying until you succeed. Once again, an obstacle is a learning experience, not a road block.
